Hafiz Alam Sairani
Honoring the legacy

Hafiz Alam Sairani (1 February 1960 – 28 October 2024) was an Indian politician, teacher, and social worker who devoted his life to public service and the upliftment of marginalized communities. He served as the Vice President of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) and was widely admired for his honesty, simplicity, and dedication.
Sairani began his political journey with the All India Forward Bloc, where he rose to the position of Secretary and served as a Secretariat Member of the Left Front State Committee. He later joined the Congress and continued his mission of service. During his tenure as Relief and Co-operative Minister in the Left Front government of West Bengal, he worked diligently for the welfare of common people. Elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for three terms, he earned the enduring trust of his constituents.
A champion of minority rights, Sairani strongly advocated for a Muslim quota in West Bengal after the Sachar Committee report. His efforts also ensured official recognition for Madrasas, a milestone in expanding educational opportunities.
Above all, he remained a teacher at heart, deeply committed to education and social progress. His legacy of integrity and service continues to inspire generations.

Today, we remember an honest and corruption-free leader. Despite being in power for many years, he remained untouched by corruption. Such examples are rare in politics.

I remember Sairani Saheb as a nationalist leader. During the Singur and Nandigram movements, even while being part of the ruling alliance, he had the courage to speak up for the farmers’ interests. His contribution to the Nandigram movement will always be remembered.
